The brief
In 2022, launching an NFT collection meant command-line tools written for developers. Artists had the work but not the code, so most of them couldn't take part. NFT-Inator set out to make the whole thing possible in a browser, with no code at all.
My part
I designed the product, from the generator to the dashboard and the mint pages, and built its front end together with another developer at ProcessLabs. As CMO I set the brand strategy and ran the marketing and search that brought artists to it, and it grew to 12,000 users, 15,000 projects and $20k a month in revenue.
Three hard problems
30GB that never downloads
A collection can run to 20,000 images at one or two megabytes each, around 30GB. Instead of making anyone download that, the app renders every piece in the browser and stores only what it needs to draw it.
Video in the browser
We compiled FFmpeg to WebAssembly, so animated pieces, GIFs and video with transparency render on the artist's own machine with proper codecs. Still images take a faster route through the canvas.
Straight to disk and IPFS
The File System Access API writes 20,000 files into the right folders on the artist's computer, and every piece uploads to IPFS, so the art stays reachable whatever happens to the platform.
Contracts, mint day and after
Artists could deploy a template contract to save on gas, or switch to advanced mode, where the contract is generated, tested and compiled in the browser with exactly the features they pick. For mint day there was an embed for their own site or a hosted mint page. Afterwards, a dashboard let them change prices and sale stages, manage their team, update metadata and withdraw to a payout address fixed at launch.
